Inspiration Avenue: Royal Wedding

original image
In honor of the soon-to-be-married royal couple, we were given the image shown above (among others) for inspiration for this week's art. I had fun creating a royal wedding photo, which resolves the mystery of Kate's dress--it's a custom-designed Zetti ensemble!

So-Artful Challenge: Southern Belle

original image

We were given this image of a sweet Southern belle as inspiration, and I gave her a home to stroll into on a pretty spring day. I hope all of you who are celebrating today have a wonderful holiday.

Theme Thursday: Girls

This is my twin sister and I when we were very young. I can't even tell who is who! But I absolutely love the tenderness and sweetness the photo embodies.

Take a Word: Travel

The image superimposed on the Shanghai map here is from the travel journal I kept while we were there, in 2008. We went there to visit our son, who was working there for the year. An amazing and colorful experience for us all!

So-Artful Challenge: Frida Kahlo

This week's challenge inspiration is Frida Kahlo, the well-known Mexican painter. (Coincidentally, I'm currently working on a portrait sketch based on the central photo (by Imogen Cunningham) shown in my digital collage. I may post it when it's finished.)

Other image credits: rubyblossom (stone window background); and Google images for the Kahlo painting images.

Sunday Postcard Art: Song Title (Corrected Posting)

This song (already a big favorite of mine) was playing at the "singles dance" where my husband and I first met (about 40 years ago), when he asked me to dance for the first time.

Three Muses: Keys

I've been waiting for a chance to use a stunningly colored textured background from rubyblossom (flickr creative commons), who is one of my favorite (free!) sources for digital images. I've altered it here with filters and other effects. I also used a stone background image from a personal photo; and keys by soartful, sherriejd, and milla.

Collage Obsession: Background Images

original image

This week we were given a choice of background images to use as the basis for our artwork. I chose the "frozen pond" image above for my digital collage, envisioning it with cool and graceful ballet dancers rising from the frosty water.

So-Artful Challenge: Arch Image

original image

We were given the arch image shown above as inspiration. I thought I saw a woman's face hiding somewhere in the image, and sure enough, here she is.

Two Challenges in One Collage: "Lace" and "Dance"

This digital collage is for this week's Sunday Postcard Art challenge ("Dance"), and the Take a Word challenge ("Lace"). The main image of the dancing women is from graphicsfairy. Most of the lace images are from my own scans.

I thought I'd take a humorous approach to this elegant theme. Image credits upon request.

Kim Klassen's Texture Tuesday Challenge: Warm Sun

altered photo with "warm sun" texture

my original photo

This is a new challenge for me. Kim Klassen creates amazing textures for use in digital art. (See her blog, kimklassencafe.com) This week she has challenged participants to enhance one of our photos with her texture "warm sun" (pictured above). I combined the texture with a photo I took last month of a Riverwalk setting in San Antonio, Texas. I also used Photoshop Elements a little bit to create a more "painted" and textured look. Many of the participants in Kim's challenges are accomplished photographers -- I'm in awe of their talent. Please check out her site and see the beautiful work!

Collage Obsession: Casanova

original image

Yes, our challenge this week was to create art inspired by the legendary 18th century lover himself, Casanova.  He would have celebrated his 286th    birthday this past Saturday!

Take a Word Challenge: Umbrella

I've been waiting for a chance to use a duck photo I took on Riverwalk in San Antonio about a month ago. The ducks there are quite bold, and often hop up onto the sidewalk next to the river to preen, beg for food, or in this case, fluff their feathers after a publicly romantic romp with another duck. My attempt to get a pretty good close-up actually worked this time! In this digital collage, "my" duck is very politely sheltering some little friends from the rain.

Other image credits: shadowhouse; media militia; peggy gatto (umbrella, altered with my own pattern); vintage moth; deviant scrap; The lace design is from a piece of lace I once scanned. (I scan everything--watch out!)

Sunday Postcard Art: Mothers

Apparently today is Mother's Day in the UK, and this challenge honors that special occasion. I wish all mothers everywhere a wonderful day!

You may recognize the mother's face in this collage from my last posting (Game/Puzzle piece collage). Here I gave her a new outfit, hat, eye color, and hair. Also, you may have noticed that (courtesy of PSE and me) the mom and daughter have exactly the same hairstyle!
